In a world where daily demands can feel overwhelming, it’s easy to blur the line between stress and anxiety.
On the latest episode of the Healthier Michigan Podcast, host Chuck Gaidica sits down with Dr. William Beecroft, Medical Director of Behavioral Health at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, to clarify these common emotions and offer practical guidance for managing them.

Stress v. anxiety

Beecroft explains that while stress and anxiety are frequently used interchangeably, they are fundamentally different. Stress is the body’s response to external pressures, such as work or life challenges, often triggering physical symptoms like tightness in the chest, sweating and a racing mind. These reactions are rooted in our evolutionary fight-or-flight system, a mechanism that once helped humans survive real dangers but can become problematic when activated too often.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is a symptom that can develop from stress but is more internalized and persistent. It may be triggered by past traumas or learned behaviors and can cause someone to become hyper-focused or distracted, missing what’s happening around them. Beecroft notes that anxiety can be set off by seemingly minor events if they echo past traumatic experiences, leading to a release of stress hormones like adrenaline that can become overwhelming.

How to manage stress and anxiety

To manage stress and anxiety, Beecroft recommends proactive strategies. Exercise helps the body regulate adrenaline and build resilience. Mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, prayer, tai chi or meditation can calm the mind and body. Recognizing symptoms early is key; employing relaxation techniques before stressful events can prevent escalation.
Beecroft also highlights the importance of self-awareness and seeking support when needed. Learning to identify personal triggers, understanding the difference between stress and anxiety and reaching out to therapists or trusted individuals can make a significant difference. He emphasizes that while managing these emotions takes time and effort, it is possible for everyone to achieve a better quality of life.
Ultimately, stress and anxiety are different but connected. With the right tools and support, anyone can learn to manage them and improve their well-being.
