The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has changed the childhood vaccine schedule as of Jan. 5, 2026. The new schedule reduces the number of recommended vaccines for children 11 years old and younger. Certain vaccines, including influenza, rotavirus, meningococcal and hepatitis A, are now only recommended for certain groups or based on shared clinical decisions with the individual’s health care provider.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s vaccine coverage has not changed.
“For decades, science has proven the efficacy and safety of many vaccines and as such, we have included those vaccinations in our covered benefits,” said Dr. James Grant, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “Those interested in obtaining a vaccine should speak with their physician to determine appropriateness.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics has not changed its vaccine schedule recommendations for infants and children. These vaccines help reduce the spread of disease, and annually prevents tens of millions of cases of dangerous diseases such as measles, mumps, polio and rubella. High rates of vaccines are necessary for the health and safety of all children in Michigan.
Michigan students are required to have the following vaccinations:
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTP, DTaP)
- Polio
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Hepatitis B
- Meningococcal Conjugate
- Varicella (Chickenpox)
Vaccines have proven for decades to reduce individual risk of contracting serious illnesses. Blue Cross’ vaccine coverage includes more than a dozen vaccines, including:
- COVID-19
- DTaP
- Flu
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- HPV
- Meningitis
- Polio
- RSV
Talk to your primary care provider or child’s pediatrician about the non-mandated vaccines to determine what is best for your child.
