About one in four Americans age 65 or older have a fall annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Falls account for 3 million emergency department visits and 1 million hospitalizations in the United States each year.
Physical weakness and balance issues are among the causes for falls, meaning physical strength and mobility are an important part of healthy aging. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is offering free, weekly online classes to help our members with maintaining their mobility.
Here’s what to know about Asahi® and how to access these classes.

What is Asahi?

Asahi is a versatile form of physical exercise that can be practiced by people of all ages and in all states of health. Originating in Finland and based on tai chi and chi gong, Asahi is known for its holistic approach, incorporating gentle movements synchronized with slow breathing. It is a simple, comprehensive and efficient exercise routine, which helps people improve their health and quality of life. These movements and breathing progress simultaneously at a slow tempo. The basic routine warms up, exercises and relaxes the whole body systematically. Whether you're an athlete seeking post-workout recovery or an individual looking for stress relief, Asahi offers a fitness program that caters to everyone.
Continuing this practice each week for months can help you improve your mobility, help prevent falls and contribute to better physical and mental health. Mobility is closely linked to increased physical activity, fall prevention and overall better physical and mental health. By improving your mobility, you can:
  • Improve your metabolism
  • Support your immune system
  • Reduce pain in your back, neck and shoulders
  • Strengthen your legs
  • Develop better balance
