It’s no secret that here at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM), we love our state. Along with beautiful communities and unparalleled recreation opportunities, Michiganders have a fighting spirit and a can-do attitude. It’s no surprise that the traits that define who we are as residents also extend to the health care arena. A willingness to cross “turf” boundaries, share information, and harness the power of information makes Michigan a power player when it comes to health care. The state serves as a model when it comes to keeping costs down. In addition, health care is a major source of employment in many communities across the state, contributing to vibrant downtowns and infrastructure. “I think Michigan’s doing a lot of things right,” said Robert Riney, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Henry Ford Health System. As Michigan’s dominant insurer, Blue Cross is at the forefront of many initiatives to improve quality of care and outcomes, foster collaboration, and rein in costs and spending. We’re also fully invested in Michigan’s core cities, employing more than 6,300 people in downtown Detroit alone, making Blue Cross one of the city’s largest employers. We also have regional headquarters in downtown Grand Rapids and satellite offices in Portage, Marquette, Traverse City, Holland, and other locations. We sat down with health care leaders from across the state to ask them what they thought about Michigan’s health care system. In a series of blog posts over the next few days, we’ll examine three key factors that make the state a shining star: a focus on keeping costs low, collaboration, and the role health care plays in employment across the state. Check back tomorrow to read about how Michigan is keeping costs low. If you liked this post, you might also enjoy:
