Neighborhoods are the building blocks of every community. Each one reflects the strength and character of their respective cities. At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, we believe Detroit’s livelihood is rooted in the spirit of its people and are investing in their future health and happiness. Earlier today, we announced the Detroit neighborhood we’ll be focusing a $5 million commitment to as part of Mayor Mike Duggan’s Strategic Neighborhood and Affordable Housing Leverage Fund. We’re one of seven organizations contributing to a $35 million initiative geared toward the revitalization of Detroit communities.
Blue Cross will specifically focus on the East Warren/Cadieux Corridor, helping to support local businesses, restore streetscapes and preserve affordable housing. It is a multiyear project, with collective funds being dispersed through 2022. A crucial part of the neighborhood initiative is the inclusion of local business and home owners. The people who live and work in the neighborhood can best speak to the needs that exist, helping to guide the restoration process. It’s a true joint effort that will bring new life to the selected districts. A cleaner, safer and more vibrant community will attract residents and customers alike. It will also reduce health determinants often linked to underserved and undervalued environments. Historically, Blue Cross has always found ways to give back to the community. The neighborhood initiative is one of many ongoing efforts to tackle social and environmental factors impacting public health. In 2018, with help from like-minded organizations, Blue Cross donated an estimated $2.5 million to Michigan-based programs. By leveraging our corporate relationships, we’ve been able to address and meet citizen’s diverse needs. Blue Cross’ connection to the City of Detroit runs deep. It’s home to our corporate headquarters, located in downtown’s central business district. In 2011, we doubled our workforce and started bringing 3,000 jobs to the burgeoning area. We’ve also invested in public safety and transportation by funding new police and EMS vehicles as well as bike sharing stations and the QLine transit. Blue Cross has been an active participant in the overall city’s economic resurgence. Yet, our commitment doesn’t stop with Downtown Detroit. We pursue projects that bolster the well-being of all communities, not just those we inhabit. Providing high-quality, affordable health care is just one part of Blue Cross’ long-standing social mission. Whether it’s at home, school, the doctor’s office or pharmacy, we’re committed to every aspect of healthy living, for every resident in every neighborhood we serve.
