At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, our mission is grounded in purpose — delivering high-quality, affordable health care to the people and communities we serve. In 2024, that purpose was tested by extraordinary industry challenges — from skyrocketing medical and pharmacy costs to growing demand for services and evolving member expectations.
Our medical and pharmacy claims rose by $3 billion in 2024 over the prior year, sounding the horn for greater partnership across the health care ecosystem, from hospitals to providers to pharmaceutical companies and payers like Blue Cross.
We responded with urgency and resolve, accelerating our affordability strategy and laying the groundwork for launching meaningful transformation. Based on the efforts of 2024, we entered 2025 with renewed focus and a bold plan: BCBM Accelerated.
This initiative reimagines how we operate — introducing new models of care, deploying advanced technologies, and improving how we engage with and support our members.
Through BCBSM Accelerated, we are delivering on our promise across four areas of focus:
- Talent — How we build to remain strong and sustainable today and in the future for our stakeholders.
- Technology — Delivering efficiency and value to the health care system through analytics, automation and responsible artificial intelligence.
- Collaboration — Being better together by promoting a culture that engages the right people, at the right time to identify the best solutions for our members.
- Rigor and agility — Strengthening our speed, accountability and commitment to care delivery.
Guided by this framework, our teams are leading boldly — from leveraging artificial intelligence to predict chronic disease earlier, to modernizing customer reporting tools and launching new digital platforms that enhance service and improve access to information.
Yet 2024 saw many other notable milestones. Our Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans earned 4.5 Stars. We also celebrated the 20th year of our Value Partnerships program, which has saved $6.3 billion in unnecessary medical expenses through better outcomes and lower costs in that time. And we further deepened our data protections, continually raising the bar for how we safeguard member information.
These milestones are a direct result of our people — skilled, passionate professionals who never lose focus on doing what’s right for our members. They continue to drive progress in how care is delivered and how it’s experienced across every stage of life.
Our focus on transformation is built on a foundation of trust. For 86 years, members have turned to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan because they know they can count on us. That trust remains our North Star, guiding how we enhance health care experiences for every member.
We also recognized the remarkable legacy of Daniel J. Loepp, who led Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan with distinction for two decades, concluding his tenure at the end of 2024. Under Dan’s leadership, the company navigated transformational change — expanding access, strengthening community partnerships, diversifying operations and reinforcing our nonprofit mission.
As the health care landscape continues to evolve, our direction is clear and full of opportunity. We will continue to advance our mission by delivering value to our members and helping shape a more affordable, effective health care system for the future.
