Ten years ago, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan launched a program that has transformed health care delivery, saved hundreds of millions of dollars and improved lives across the state (and nation). The program, Value Partnerships, is an award-winning suite of initiatives that shows what can be accomplished when physicians, healthcare professionals, hospitals and insurance companies work together. This Thursday, May 7, Blue Cross’ Chief Medical Officer, Thomas L. Simmer, M.D., will speak at the Modern Healthcare Issues Briefing, an event that is bringing together Detroit health care leaders to discuss how population health management is being addressed within the local healthcare market. As a panelist, Dr. Simmer will share insight from the past 10 years of Value Partnerships. And what a decade it’s been. Value Partnerships, which is actually a group of more than 50 separate programs, is all about collaboration. The programs empower physicians to handle issues confidently and to prioritize the quality of care they deliver instead of the quantity of services they perform. The programs also empower patients to become their own health advocate as well as educate themselves about health issues and treatments. While the focus of Value Partnerships is on Michigan, it has been noticed by experts in the healthcare industry all over the country. In fact, Blue Cross representatives have been asked to speak in front of Congress numerous times about Value Partnerships. In addition to Dr. Simmer sharing insight from our Value Partnerships program, the Modern Healthcare Issues event will also provide information on strategies related to:
  • Engaging patients in their care
  • Leveraging new technological tools and analytics to pinpoint issues and improve care
  • Participating in Accountable Care Organizations and other emerging delivery models
  • Managing the health of complex patients
  • Collaborating with insurers
While the event is currently sold out, Blue Cross will be live-tweeting from the @BCBSM Twitter handle so you can follow along. We’ll also be sharing a recap blog post on key takeaways from the event, so be sure to check back later for a more in-depth summary.
